BIOGRAPHY

Benny Newman was one of St.Catharines greatest sportsmen as well as a philanthropist and fan. He organized, coached and sponsored St.Catharines Hellcats, who won two Canadian senior basketball championships and one juvenile (Hellkittens) in the 1940s and organized Toronto’s first NBA team, the Huskies, in 1946 after playing the game in local church leagues, the Collegiate and at Queen’s University. No athlete who needed financial help to play for local, national or international teams or obtain a college education was ever turned down by Benny Newman who died in 1991.
