Elmer Vasko moved into the Niagara Region when he was very young and played his formative hockey years within the St. Catharines Minor hockey system. Vasko was one of the few players from St. Catharines area to graduate to the NHL ranks. Already a solid defenseman, Vasko helped anchor the St. Catharines Teepees to their first Memorial Cup Championship in 1954. Drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks, Vasko quickly made his mark on the NHL and was recognized as an All-star defenseman throughout his 13 season in the league. Vasko played 10 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks including the Stanley Cup Champion team of 1960 – 1961. Elmer Vasko finished his NHL career with the Minnesota North Stars for three seasons and was awarded the captaincy for 1968 – 1969.
