George Hope, known as “Toughy” was coached by his father Bill Hope in the early 1930’s. Bill had won 11 consecutive Globe championships beginning in 1900 and then coached several other future Mann Cup players. Toughy’s team won four Ontario Junior Championships while having two undefeated seasons. In 1936, Toughy began playing Senior Lacrosse and only a year later in 1937 was Ontario Senior Lacrosse Finalist. Throughout his career he excelled— From 1936-1941 his team became Ontario Senior Lacrosse Champions, and three times Mann Cup National Champions. His nickname “Toughy” stems from his tough checking style and hard accurate shot.
