Harvey Hutcheon is one of the best-known names in St. Catharines rowing history. Wearing the Collegiate colours, he is the only St. Catharines sculler to win the Canadian and North American high school rowing singles championships in the late 1930’S and would have become the first local rower to win the Canadian Henley championship singles but for joining the armed forces soon after the outbreak of the Second World War. Attending Syracuse University, he was one of the first St. Catharines athletes to be awarded a full U.S. sports scholarship and was a member of the Syracuse Orangemen Rowing team from 1939 through 1942. The Harvey Hutcheon Memorial named in his honour is awarded to the Junior A Oarsmen of the year. The Harvey Hutcheon Trophy is awarded to the Junior B Women’s Singles Champion of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
