Joe and Rose Engemann were the founders of the Spartan Athletic Club, which was founded in 1960. The Spartan Athletic Club is a host to a number of sports including; lacrosse, soccer, basketball, softball, ice hockey and floor hockey. As many as 2000 players were able to participate in sports because of this club, none of which were ever turned down due to lack of equipment. Later there was a limited 50 teams housed out of this club, travelling, minor house, and men 20-40, which encapsulated approximately 1000 players. Later on The Spartan Athletic Club took over the Niagara Jr B Warriors, being renamed to the Spartan Warriors which remains as such to this day. During the days of The Spartan Athletic Club, this club helped to shape the lives of thousands of youngsters throughout the city of St. Catharines. Contributing a great deal to the community and to sports as a whole, later Engeman was named the St. Cathariens Sportsman of the Year, inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1992, and they were the first couple to be inducted into the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
