Born in Montreal, Thompson came to St. Catharines at the age of five and lived here for thirteen years. She was a member of the St. Catharines Winter Club for nine years (1951-1962) before moving on to train in Toronto while still living in St. Catharines. Highlights of her skating career include; world championships silver medalist in 1960 and bronze medalist in 1962 for dance pairs, gold medalist in 1960, 1961 and 1962 Canadian senior dance championships, and gold medalist in 1961 North American dance championships. Thompson along with her dance partner, Bill McLachlan were inducted into the Canadian Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1997. Thompson went on to become a national dance judge, judging two Canadian championships and was an International Skating Union judge (ISU) from 1989 to 1991.
