William B.C Burgoyne was the third generation publisher of the St. Catharines Standard, as well as a contributor to various sports organizations throughout St. Catharines, most notably of which was rowing. Burgoyne was instrumental in bringing the North American Rowing Championships to St. Catharines in 1967. In addition he was the Financial Chairman of the championship event, and three years later he helped to bring the World Rowing Championships to the Henley Rowing Course. A past President of the Henley Aquatic Association, as well as a past Director of the Rowing Club, and an Honourary member of the Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen, Burgoyne was able to contribute a great deal to the sport of rowing over the course of his involvement. In addition to his involvement with rowing, Burgoyne, with the assistance of Jack Gatecliff and Carl Dorland formed the St. Catharines Standard Basketball Tournament. For all of William B.C. Burgoyne’s dedication to furthering the sport of rowing he was awarded the Medal of Honour by F.I.S.A.
